Juan Bautista de Espinosa was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period. Bautista de Espinosa is not the same painter as Juan de Espinosa, who lived from 1645 to 1677. Unfortunately, little is known about the personal life of Bautista de Espinosa. Documents show that he lived in Madrid and Toledo for many years.

While Bautista de Espinosa painted various religious paintings, he is best remembered as a still life painter. His style has been described as containing both Flemish and Spanish Baroque elements.

Some art historians believe that Bautista de Espinosa came from a prestigious family, but was orphaned early in his life. It is also thought he was raised by Eugenia de Lievana, related to the Onofre de Espinosa family. Bautista de Espinosa married in 1628, but specific details are not known about his wife or children.

Bautista de Espinosa’s still life paintings are known for their tenebrism, or dramatic lighting, typical of Spanish still life paintings at that time. He often painted fruit, particularly bunches of grapes.

While many mysteries remain, surrounding the life of the artist, Juan Bautista de Espinosa, his paintings remain well preserved in major Spanish collections. Some of his pieces belong to Madrid’s Museo del Prado. Do you think you own a painting by Juan Bautista de Espinosa? Contact us. We are the experts.
