Emile-Othon Friesz was born in Le Havre, France and studied at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Here he was able to study under Lhullier, and later won a scholarship to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Matisse, Dufy, Marquet and Bonnat. During this time he was also highly influenced by the works of Corot and Pissaro. Friesz would eventually become friends with Pissaro after a brief stint in the military in 1902.

Friesz remained in Paris and had his first exhibition in 1900 at the Salon des Artistes Français. He would continue to show his work all over Paris, and then in Berlin from 1909-1912.

These initial travels to Germany were just the beginning for the young artist, who would travel extensively through Europe over the years to Portugal, Belgium and more.

Freisz lived and worked with Matisse for a short time in 1914, whose influence is quite clear in “Paysage Provencal.”

For the bulk of his career as an artist, Friesz was generally a Fauve painter. However, as time went on his work became softer and more Impressionistic.

From this time on, Friesz took to teaching art; from 1912-1921 he taught at the Academie Moderne and again he taught in 1929 at the Academie Scandinavie. Towards the end of his life he also taught at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere.

Friesz would eventually go by the name “Othon Friesz” and dropped the “Emile.” However, he sometimes signed his work with a stamped initial “EOF,” which may be confusing to someone trying to authenticate his work. Friesz work was exhibited all over Europe during his lifetime, and is housed today worldwide in Paris, New York, Brussels, Zuric and St. Petersburg.
