Ants Laikmaa was an Estonian painter born in the rural village of Araste with the given name, Hans Laipman. Laikmaa officially changed his name is 1935. Depite being from a poor family, Laikmaa was able to attend school, where he realized his talent in the arts. Laikmaa moved to Düsseldorf where he studied and worked at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

In 1899 Laikmaa returned to Estonia, settling in the vibrant city of Tallinn. Back in Estonia, Laikmaa led Estonia’s first local art exhibitions in Tallinn and Tartu. Laikmaa proceeded to found the Estonian Art Association in 1907 and the Estonian National Museum in Tartu.

Laikmaa’s style was bold and Impressionist, bringing a modern approach that connected Estonia with movements spreading across Europe. Laikmaa preferred working with pastels, a medium with which he created a large number of portrait and landscape drawings. Estonian artists flocked to Laikmaa’s studio in Tallinn, where they learned his fresh approach.
