Nikola Martinoski was a Macedonian painter, often referred to as the founder of contemporary Macedonian art. Martinoski was born in Kurusova to an Aromanian family. He showed an interest in painting at an early age and began training in the workshop of Dimitar Andonov-Papradinski. In the 1920s he enrolled at the Bucharest National University of Arts, followed by the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.

In 1929, Martinoski returned to Macedonia, settling in the capital city of Skopje. He began exhibiting both locally and in the cities of Belgrade, Zagreb and Paris. He also helped establish the National Gallery of Macedonia.

Before Matinoski’s death he gifted sixty-nine paintings to the town of Kruševo, which is now home to a gallery dedicated to his work. Many of his paintings depict wet nurses, maids or gypsies. Rather than drab depictions, they are vibrant and colorful portraits with expressive brushwork.
