Aleksandra Belcova was a Russian artist born in Surazh under the Russian Empire. Belcova began her artistic training at art school in Penza, a small city southeast of Moscow. In Penza, Belcova met a number of Latvian refugees who were also studying art. Belcova was persuaded to travel to Latvia with Romans Suta, who eventually became her husband. The couple joined the Riga Artists Group and Belcova later exhibited with the Riga Graphic Artists Association.

Belcova’s style transitioned from more experimental, modern techniques to realist portraits and still life paintings. Belcova and her husband travelled frequently, which helped expose them to the changing trends in painting.

Belcova’s former apartment in Riga is now a museum, dedicated to her and her husband’s life and work. Many of her works also hand in the Lavian Museum of National Art.
