Joaquin Clausell Troconi was born in San Francisco de Campeche in 1866. Clausell was one of the first and best-known Impressionist painters in Mexico. Clausell began his studies in engineering and then switched to law. During this time of legal study he dedicated time to drawing political cartoons, collaborating with a periodicals, La Campaña Electoral, El Hijo del Ahuizote, el Diario del Hogar and El Universal.

In 1892 Clausell created an anti-reelection party and started writing for La Republica. For political reasons, Clausell decided to move to New York and later Paris.

In France Clausell met Camille Pissarro and maintained a friendship with Emile Zola and Gerardo Murillo. Clausell returned to Mexico with hope in the revolutionary ideals he had experienced abroad.

In Mexico, at the age of thirty-five Clausell began a new career as a painter. Clausell painted the rich landscapes of Mexico, ranging from parks to oceans. Clausell used impressionist strokes and rich colors to interpret his surroundings. In 1935 Clausell’s love of nature led to his accidental death in the lagoons of Cempoala, Mexico.
