Francis Hayman was an 18th century English painter and illustrator. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy , and was also its first official librarian. He was born in Devon and initially began his career as a set painter for London ‘s Drury Lane Theater.

Hayman was highly influenced by the French Rococo style, and was equally gifted painting portraits, landscapes and genre and history scenes.

He later illustrated scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, as well as a number of other publications and went on to become an instructor of a number of well-known British artists, among them, Thomas Gainsborogh.
