John Hoppner was an 18th century English painter. Hoppner was mainly a portrait painter, and entered the Royal Academy in 1775. He won many awards, including the highest award that the academy had to offer, the gold medal, in 1782 for his historical painting of King Lear.

Hoppner initially painted landscapes, though out of necessity, he turned to portrait paintings to support himself. This early love for landscape can be seen in some of his portraits, as he often incorporated his subjects into idyllic landscapes or with lush surroundings.

Art historians claim that Hoppner was most talented in his portrayals of women and children, though during his lifetime, his career was marred by scandal. Hoppner openly admitted to imitating the style of fellow painter Reynolds, and thus, his work suffered great depreciation in his lifetime. Today however, they remain important pieces of art history and are housed in prestigious collections worldwide.
