Rothermel was an American painter born in Nescopeck, Pennsylvania. Rothermel studied under John R. Smith and Bass Otis before leaving for a more immersive study in Europe. Rothermel returned to Pennsylvania to build a career as a painter.

Rothermel concentrated on portraits and historical paintings. Rothermel was commissioned to paint important portraits including Patrick Henry of the Virginia House of Burgesses. Rothermel also received important history painting commissions including the documentation of the Battle of Gettysburg, which belongs to the Pennsylvania State Museum. “Columbus before the Queen” is another one of Rothermel’s better-known history paintings.

Rothermel was an important figure in the Pennsylvania art community. Rothermel was Vice President of the Artists’ Fund Society in 1844 and as Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1847 to 1855.

While little is known concerning the details of Rothermel’s private life, the reputation of his artwork has remained strong. Rothermel’s history paintings have been reproduced in various texts and educational resources. Rothermel’s portraits are in various private and public collections.
