John William Casilear was born in New York City in 1811. Casilear is known as an important American painter of the Hudson River School. Casilear trained under important New York engravers Peter Maverick and Asher Durand during the 1820s and 30s.

Durand exposed Casilear to landscape painting and invited him to come on a group, painting trip in Europe. The group made trips to museums and painted various scenes. The trip inspired Casilear to end his work as an engraver and paint full-time. Casilear became a member of the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited for more than fifty years. Casilear built an extensive landscape portfolio, making numerous trips around the state of New York.

Casilear was a lover of nature and spent much of his life in the outdoors, capturing the sunrises and sunsets in his beloved home state. Casilear would depict the landscape as seasons changed.

Casilear eventually settled in Saratoga Springs, New York where he died in 1893. Casilear did many paintings around Saratoga Springs including the popular summer spot, Lake George.

Casilear’s paintings are in the most prestigious collections in the United States including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Casilear’s paintings are also in smaller, private collections across the United States. Do you think you own a painting by John William Casilear? Contact us.
