Charles-Louis Clérisseau was an 18th century French artist. He was a student of Panini, a great painter of ancient ruins, and Clérisseau followed in his masters’ steps. Clérisseau was also an architectural draughtsman and an antiquary and spent much of his life in Rome after winning the Prix de Rome.

Clérisseau taught many artists of the younger generation the ways of neoclassical architecture painting, such as Francois-Joseph Belanger, who was never able to visit Rome. Most notably, Clérisseau assisted the then American minister and future president, Thomas Jefferson, in producing designs for the Virginia State Capitol building in 1785.
