Julio Gonzalez was a Spanish sculptor, known for his metal Cubist and Expressionist busts and figure studies. He was trained in metal working by his father, also a sculptor and goldsmith as a young man. However, early on, Gonzalez mainly worked as a painter, though his paintings are now all but forgotten. Many of his drawings, sketches and studies for his sculptures still remain.

Gonzalez moved to Paris in 1900 where, like so many other artists, he became friends with Picasso and socialized with the bohemian art circle. Gonzalez and Picasso would remain lifelong friends, sharing their love of Cubism and their Spanish heritage.

By the 1920?s, Gonzalez had devoted himself entirely to metal sculpture which he would become renowned for. His most famous piece is entitled ?Montserrat,? a sculpture that Gonzalez created as a memorial to the Spanish Civil War.
