Franz Anton Maulbertsch was an Austrian artist, considered to be the foremost painter of frescoes during the Hapsburg period. Some of his portraits in the form of oil paintings still survive today, though he is primarily known for his outstanding decorations.

Maulbertsch was particularly productive and worked all over Europe creating glorious scenes in neoclassical, baroque and rococo styles. For many of these frescoes and decorative paintings, he created a number of preparatory drawings as well as etchings.
