Eduard Ole was an Estonian painter born in Kaagjärve, a rural district in the Governorate of Livonia. Ole began in studies in Valga before enrolling at Penza Art School, connected with the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. As a student, German Expressionism as well as other modern, abstract movements influenced Ole.
Ole returned to Estonia in 1918, where he began working as a teacher and organizing local exhibitions. Ole helped found the ‘Group of Estonian Artists’ in Tartu, marked by its modern and experimental aesthetic. By the mid-1920s, after travelling to Paris, Ole returned to a more figurative style. When Ole returned to Estonia he made a number of landscapes and skillful portraits.
Ole fled Estonia during World War II, relocating to Finland and eventually settling in Sweden. In Scandinavia, Ole continued painting landscapes and worked as an illustrator in Stockholm. Towards the end of his life, Ole was granted the Culture Award of Estonians in Sweden.
Ole’s oeuvre can be noted for its great range of style, palette and subject matter. Many of his works are in major museum collections in Estonia. If you think you may own original artwork by Eduard Ole, contact Art Experts for information regarding our services.
