Anton Ažbe was a realist painter from Slovenia. Childhood difficulties included being born with a physical handicap and being orphaned as a young child. Ažbe left his hometown, Klagenfurt and fled to Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana. In Ljubljana, Ažbe met an established painter, Janez Wolf who hired him to work on several church frescoes. Wolf helped Ažbe apply to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

After a short amount of time in Vienna, Ažbe decided to transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Ažbe’s stlye was highly influenced by his time in Munich, where he made many of his most recognized works.

Ažbe was a master figure painting. His major works include portraits as well as genre paintings or group scenes. Ažbe studied human anatomy in depth and was even known to attend autopsies to improve his anatomical knowledge.

Ažbe was also known as a great teacher. He allegedly promised his mentor, Wolf, he would continue to train some of his students after his death. While Ažbe was known for Realism, he trained many artists who became Slovenia’s most recognized impressionists. Many of Ažbe’s paintings are now in the collection of the National Museum of Slovenia.
