Pompeo Batoni was an 18th century portrait painter. Batoni was popular among British and Russian collectors.  His British patrons were particularly fond of Batoni’s drawings of classical sculpture.  He also became quite popular in Italy as a painter of altarpieces and was most productive during the 1740s.  Besides painting portraits, Batoni also created genre scenes as well as paintings of mythological and religious subjects.  A catalogue raisonné of his work was completed in 1985 by Anthony M. Clark.
