Andrew Black was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1851. Black is known for painting seascapes of harbors and fishermen along the shores of Ayrshire and Kintyre in West Scotland.

Black began as a pattern-designer to a firm of calico printers in Glasgow. Like many other West of Scotland artists, Black prepared for a painter’s career by taking Robert Greenlees’ classes at the School of Art in Glasgow.

Black joined the Glasgow Art Club in 1870, receiving considerable encouragement as an amateur painter of landscapes in watercolor. Black traveled to Paris to study under masters, Bouguereau and Fleury, an experience, which strongly affected Black’s work. Very soon, Black started painting his trademark seascapes in oils.

Black exhibited in the Royal Academy in Scotland and became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours. Black also exhibited for many years at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.

Black’s work has made its way into collections throughout Scotland, the UK and the world. Do you think you own a painting by Andrew Black. Contact us. We are the Andrew Black experts.
