Heinrich Campendonk was a German expressionist painter and printmaker. He was born in Krefeld, and studied there under the Dutch artist Johan-Thorn Prikker at the Kunstgewerbeschule. After receiving an invitation from Franz Marc, Campendonk moved to Bavaria and was a member of the Der Blaue Reiter group from 1911 to 1912.

When the Nazi regime came to power in 1933, he was among the many modernists condemned as degenerate artists, and prohibited from exhibiting.

In 1916, Campendonk moved to Seeshaupt at the Starnberger See, and was appointed as a professor at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf in 1926. He was dismissed from his job in 1933 and moved to Belgium, where he spent the rest of his life working at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, first teaching Decorative Art, printmaking and stained-glass, then as the Academy Director.

Campendonk did not return to Germany after World War II, but continued working on his teaching career. During this time, he received many commissions for painting stained glass windows from Germany and the Netherlands. He was awarded the Quellinus-Preise of the city of Amsterdam in 1956, and was dubbed a knight by the order of de Neederlandse Leeuw. He died in Amsterdam in 1957.
