Abraham Ángel was a Mexican painter known for his colorful, naïve style, who is an important artist of the Post-Revolutionary era in Mexico.

In 1905 Abraham Angel was born in El Oro, Mexico as the youngest of five children. In 1907, Ángel’s family moved to Puebla until his father’s promotion led them to Mexico City. Ángel lost contact with much of his family, with the exception of his eldest brother. Ángel sometimes went by his second, maternal last-name, Card.

Not much is known of Ángel’s early years in Mexico City, except that he left home in 1922 to surround himself with stimulating, artistic friends. Among these friends was painter, Rodriguez Lozano.

For a short while, Ángel became Lozano’s pupil. The artists travelled to Cuernavaca on painting trips working with other notable artists of the time.

Ángel painted portraits of friends and acquaintances as well as landscapes of Mexico. Ángel’s paintings were praised for their pure, naïve and imaginative quality that stepped outside of the status quo.

Tragically, Abraham Ángel’s story ends early as he died before reaching twenty years of age. Ángel was humiliated and depressed when his teacher, Lozano left him for another pupil. Ángel died of a drug overdose in 1924.

Ángel’s limited number of paintings are highly valued and appreciated. Do you think that you might own an Abraham Ángel? Contact us. We are the Abraham Ángel experts.
