Paul Comolera was born in Paris, France in 1818. He was known as one of the great Animaliers. Comolera proved to be both an incredible art talent and a competent instructor to those choosing to follow in his footsteps.

Comolera was a student of the sculptor Francois Rude and later went on to instruct Jules Moigniez (one of the greatest sculptors of the Animalier school).

Comolera’s works are much like Moigniez’s works in that they all have similar finishes, construction, form, and detail. What sets Comolera’s work apart from other sculptors is that his are of a more naturalistic style. Most of the sculptures are birds although he did produce some others such as farm animals. They do not show romantic elements.

Comolera first exhibited his works at the Salon in 1846, and he continued to exhibit there until he died in 1897.

Authentic Comolera pieces are more than likely figures of birds since that was his subject of choice. However, sculptures of other animals do exist. Comolera was also known to paint animals and designs on china.

Today, his bronzes are very valuable. Their appeal comes in the accuracy and meticulous detail. His models were usually bronzed by the foundries of Susse Freres. Rarer models executed in lead-glazed earthenware were cast by H. Boulanger et. Cie at Choisey.
