Van Coppenolle was born in Ronse, Belgium in 1843. Van Coppenolle’s parents, part of a distinguished Flemish family, moved to Paris just before the War of 1870. Van Coppenolle studied art in Paris, learning much from the landscape and still life painter, Ernest Quost (1844-1931).

In 1878, van Coppenolle moved to the village of Montigny near Versailles, France. In addition to painting, Van Coppenolle worked as a designer at a well know ceramic factory in the village. Van Coppenolle recruited many other artists from his creative circle of friends to join the factory. The recognition of the factory grew as talented artists were joining its ranks.

Van Coppenolle is best known for his highly detailed, still life paintings. Van Coppenolle painted with a colorful palette, creating compositions with emotion and zest. While floral arrangements were Van Coppenolle’s most studied subjects, he also did many meticulous studies of hens, roosters and other farm animals. His paintings are known for being vibrant and energetic.

Van Coppenolle was successful as a painter, exhibiting actively in Belgium and France. Many of van Coppenolle’s works were lost during World War I and World War II due to the destruction of Montigny. The paintings of Edmond van Coppenolle that survived are in various collections and locations. Do you think you own an Edmond van Coppenolle painting? Contact us.
