John Crome was an 18th century English Romantic artist. He is sometimes referred to as “Old Crome” to distinguish himself from his son, John Berney Crome, who was also a well-known artist.

Crome was the son of a weaver and was initially apprenticed as a young man to a sign maker. Art historians say that he taught himself to paint by copying the works of Gainsborough and Hobbeman, and went on to become the founder of the Norwich School of Painters. Crome worked in both oil and watercolor and was said to have created some 300 paintings, many of which were landscapes.
