Jasper Francis Cropsey was an American artist of the Hudson River School. Cropsey was born on Staten Island, New York. Cropsey had frequent childhood illnesses, which forced him to stay home. During his time of illness he picked up drawing as a hobby.

Cropsey decided to put his talent in drawing to practical use and went to school to become an architect. After several years of architectural study, Cropsey realized his calling as a painter. Cropsey took a few courses at the National Academy of Design in watercolor, and decided to leave his architecture office behind.

Cropsey began landscape painting under the guidance of Edward Maury. Through training and extensive travel in Europe, Cropsey broadened his view of art. Cropsey lived in London for many years, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and in the International Exhibition of 1862.

Cropsey eventually established himself as a painter in New York City. Cropsey worked for more than twenty years in his Manhattan studio until moving up- state to Hastings-on-Hudson.

Cropsey’s background in architecture influenced the form and precision of his paintings. What Cropsey loved about fine art, however, was the expression of bold color. Cropsey’s paintings are in major American museums, including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and in the White House. Cropsey’s home and studio in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York is now a museum, housing his work. Do you think you own one of Jasper Francis Cropsey’s landscapes? Contact us.
