Thomas Fearnley was a 19th century Norwegian painter. He was originally trained in the military but left in 1819 to pursue the arts tat the Tegneskolen in Christiania. He later moved to Copenhagen where he studied at the Kunstakadamiet until 1823. Fearnley also studied at the Konstakadamien in Stockholm from 1823-1827.

Fearnley traveled Norway extensively and studied under fellow Norwegian painter Dahl in Dresden in 1829. Thus, Fearnley’s style was greatly influenced by Dahl and one can see the similarity in their style.

Fearnley traveled all over Europe in the 1830’s, visiting London, Paris and Munich as well as Italy. During his time in Italy, Fearnley’s work was greatly influenced by the sunny nation and his subject matter was suddenly bathed in the warm southern light.

Fearnley spent the rest of his life traveling between Norway and England and eventually moved to Munich where he died in 1841. Still wondering about a Norwegian painting in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Thomas Fearnley.
