August Matthias Hagen was a Baltic artist born in the village of Trikata in Latvia. Despite becoming blind in one eye after a childhood accident, Hagen decided to pursue a career as an artist. Hagen moved to Tartu, Estonia in 1810 where he began working in the printmaking studion of Karl August Senff. After travelling to Germany and Switzerland in the 1820s, Hagen began his career as an art instructor in Tartu.

Hagen is best known for his paintings and prints of landscapes. He most frequently drew scenes from Tartu, the city where he spent most of his adult life. He painted both the architecture and surrounding environment with great precision.

In addition to his oil painting and prints, Hagen did a number of well executed drawings and ink paintings on paper. Many of his works on paper are in the collection of the University of Tartu, where Hagen taught drawing.

In addition to painting scenes around Estonia, Hagen drew form landscapes in Latvia, Findland, the Alps and Caucasus. After retiring from teaching, Hagen spent an extended amount of time in Germany with his daughter. The deterioration of his eyesight made it hard for him to work during the last years of his life.
