Julie Wilhelmine Hagen-Schwarz was a Baltic painter born in Tartu, Estonia. Hagen-Schwarz was the daughter of the prominent artist, August Matthias Hagen. While her father was known for his precise landscapes, Hagen-Schwarz was known as a portrait painter. She received formal training as an artist at the University of Tartu.

After finishing her studied in Tartu, Hagen-Schwarz received funding to work was an apprentice in the workshop of Friedrich Gonne in Dresden. After proving herself in Dresden she was hired by the workshop of Moritz Rugendas in Munich. After returning to Estonia, she received additional funding to travel to Italy.

In 1854 Hagen-Schwarz married Ludwig Schwarz, an equally adventurous astronomer. The two travelled to Siberia on an expedition where Hagen-Schwarz took the opportunity to draw her surroundings.

By the late 1950s, Hagen-Schwarz was elected to the Imperial Academy of the Arts (now known as the Russian Academy of the Arts) in St. Petersburg. Hagen-Schwarz participated in several exhibitions with the group, which helped bolster her reputation across Russia.
