William Haseltine was an American painter of the Hudson River School. Haseltine was born in Philadelphia and studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. Shortly after graduating Haseltine began to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Haseltine spent several years working with a group of American painters in Dusseldorf, Germany and explored much of Europe, gravitating to the coast of Italy.

When Haseltine returned to the United Stated he moved to New York City and worked in the popular Tenth Street Studio Building. In New York Haseltine worked from many of the sketches he had made in Europe and New England. Haseltine did a series of paintings featuring the coastline of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine. Haseltine was successful in exhibiting and was elected Associate at the National Academy of Design.

In 1867 Haseltine moved with his second wife to Rome, where he spent much of his later life. Haseltine painted the European landscape extensively, ranging from Holland to Bavaria. Haseltine’s paintings are in museums and private collections across Europe and the United States. Do you think you own a painting by William Stanley Haseltine? Contact us.
