ツ ツ

Eduard Hau was a Baltic German artist and printmaker born in Reval (presently Tallinn, Estonia) and died in Tartu, Estonia. Hau was the son of Johannes Hau, an emigrant from Northern Germany.

Hau became an esteemed portrait painter after training in Germany at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to Hau’s oil and watercolor paintings, he also produced a number of graphic works, notably lithographs.

Hau was accepted as a member of the Imperial Academy of the Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. He spent several years living and working in St. Petersburg painting architectural portraits of royal residencies. After the Gotchina Palace was destroyed in World War II, Hau’s paintings were used as a guide for restoration.

Hau eventually returned to Estonia, living the last years of his life in Tartu, the second largest city after Tallinn. In Tartu, Hau painted and drew portraits of the professors. Many of these works are still in the collection of the University of Tartu.
