Herran was born in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico in 1887. Not much is known of his childhood in Aguascalientes before his family relocated to Mexico City. Herran began his art studies at la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. After the death of his father, Herran became the family provider at a very young age. Herran worked for a telegraph company and continued his studies at night. Herran studied painting with well-known colorists and perspective painters such as German Gedovius.

Herran began to win prizes for his paintings. Between 1910 and 1911 Herran painted decorative panels for la Escuela Nacional de Artes y Oficios para Hombres. Herran started working as a professor of drawing and received a grant to study in Europe. When Herran returned from Europe he met his wife, Rosario Arellano and continued working as a professor.

In 1914 Herran began using pastels and completed a series entitled “criollas”. Herran exhibited regularly and was commissioned to do pieces throughout Mexico City. Unfortunately, Herran’s health gave out. After a gastric infection that impeded his digestion, Herran did not recover. Herran died after an unsuccessful operation at the age of thirty-one.

Saturnino Herran paintings are in museums and collections in Mexico, the United States and Europe. Do you think you own a Herran painting? Contact us. We are the Herran experts.
