Alfred Hirv was an Estonian painter born in the town of Pechory. Hirv moved to St Petersburg, Russia to study at the Stieglitz School of Art under Julius von Klever. After developing a strong foundation in Russia, Hirv continued his training in Italy and Germany. Hirv also worked under Anton Ažbe, a realist painter from Slovenia.

While the majority of Hirv’s paintings were made in the first years of the 20th century, he used a technique reminiscent of the Dutch Golden Age. Hirv executed a number of highly still life paintings with traditional objects such as fruit, wine, fish, flowers, etc. In addition to his still-lifes, Hirv painted a number of figures, both as portraits and in genre scenes.

Hirv exhibited frequently with both Balkan artists in Tartu, Estonia and Russian artists in St. Petersburg. His paintings are now in numerous museums across Europe.
