There are nine authentic portraits of John Dalton in existence. Dalton was an English chemist and physicist. He is best known for his development of the atomic theory. The English scientist was born in 1766 and died in 1844.

Portraits #1 through #7 are a series of pencil drawings by Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey. The drawings are dated 1834. Chantrey (1781-1841) was a sculptor. It appears that these drawings were a preliminary step in his sculpting process.

Thomas Phillips painted portrait #8 in 1835. Phillips (1770-1845) was an English portrait painter.
