Jens Juel was an 18th century Danish painter and was known primarily as a portrait painter. Today, many of his portraits are housed at the Frederiksborg Castle.

Juel was apprenticed at a young age to the painter Gehrmann in Hamburg and before he was 20 years old, had established himself as a respected painter of portraits and landscapes. Juel attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and was awarded gold medals from the Academy in 1767 and 1771.

Juel left Copenhagen to study in Rome and would later study in Paris and Geneva. It was in Geneva that Juel further enhanced his reputation as a painter and later returned to Copenhagen where he was highly sought after by nobility and the affluent. Juel was later named a member of the academy at Mandelbert, Abildgaard and Weidenhaupt and was named director in 1795.
