Sir Thomas Benjamin Kennington was born in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire in 1856. Kennington is well known for his portrait and genre paintings. Kennington’s interest in art began when he was a student in England. Kennington began taking courses at the Liverpool school of Art. After a few years of study he decided to further his education at the Julian Academy in Paris. Kennington was given a thorough training in the Victorian manner. Kennington frequently portrayed scenes from everyday life in his paintings. His subjects ranged from middle-class men engaging in leisure hobbies to the injustices of urban poverty.

In 1886 Kennington was a founder of the New English Arts Club along with his peers Whistler and Sickert. Kennington later helped to found the Imperial Art League. Between 1880 and 1916 Kennington exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy as well as other major galleries. During his lifetime Kennington showed hundreds of paintings.
