Robert-Jacques-Francois-Faust Lefevre was an 18th century French portrait painter. He studied law before training as an artist in Northern France under Pierre de Lesseline.

He moved to Paris in 1784, and first exhibited with the Salon in 1791. He would eventually become known for his beautiful portraits and sweeping allegorical paintings.

During the French Revolution, Lefevre turned to illustrating books rather than painting in oil due to the erosion of the market for portraits. He was particularly known for his portraits of political figures (such as Napoleon) and for society ladies, and obtained numerous commissions from Napoleon himself. He eventually became court painter for Louis XVIII, and died in Paris in 1830.

Today, Lefevre’s work is housed in public and private collections all over the world, and perhaps in your own home. Still wondering about a French Revolution era portrait or sketch in your family collection? Contact us…it could be by Robert-Jacques-Francois-Faust Lefevre.
