Georges Lemmen was a Belgian artist who painted in the Pointillist style. He initially began his studies at the St. Josse-ten-Noode School of drawing, and was influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas. Lemmen’s earliest works are in the Impressionist style, and clearly show the influence of the French masters. In 1888, he joined “Les Vingt” (the twenty), a group of avant-garde artists, and there, he met fellow Belgian artist Theo Van Rysselberghe. Through Rysselberghe’s influence, Lemmen was exposed to Pointillism.

After the 1891 death of Seurat, the founder of Pointillism, Lemmen began to break away again from Pointillism and returned to a more traditional Impressionist style. However, some art critics say that his color palette during this time was more reminiscent of the ones used by another popular group, Les Nabis.

During his career, Lemmen exhibited often in Belgium and Brussels and even traveled to England. While he is best known for his paintings, Lemmen also created book illustrations, posters, drawings, pastels, gouaches, ceramics and even carpets during his lifetime.
