William Linton was a British artist, best known for his landscape paintings. While Linton was born in Liverpool, he sent much of his childhood in Landcaster, Cartmel and Windemere. When Linton was an adolescent he had a position working in the office of a merchant. Linton was dissatisfied with his position and started copying master artworks. The aspiring artist was most drawn to landscapes and found inspiration in the work of Claude Gellee and Claude-Joseph Vernet.

By 1817 Linton decided to fully commit himself to painting and moved to London, where he entered the Royal Academy and British Institution. During the early 1820s Linton helped to found the Society of British Artists, of which he later became the President.

In 1828 Linton decided to spend the year in Italy, travelling and sketching the landscape. Linton visited several sites along the Mediterranean, which later became the subjects of sketches and epic landscape paintings. By the 1830s Linton had a solid reputation as a landscape painter and was even compared to J.M.W. Turner by art critics. Linton enjoyed consistent commissions from wealthy patrons, including the Earl of Ellesmere.

In 1831 Linton married the niece of the Countess of Winterton, Julia Adelina Swettenham, and settled in Marylebone, London, where he opened his own gallery. Linton’s reputation remained strong up until the end of his life. His paintings are now in major British collections, including the Tate Britain, Fitwilliam Museum and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
