Anton Rudolf Mauve was a Dutch realist painter born in 1838. Mauve was one of most prominent leaders of The Hague School of painting and is now remembered for his masterful paintings and influence on the early work of his cousin-by-law, Vincent van Gogh.

Mauve was born in the provincial town of Zaandam in North Holland, but moved to Haarlem shortly after his birth. The picturesque landscape of North Holland greatly influenced the subject matter of Mauve’s paintings.

In 1886 Mauve moved to the Laren, where he helped to found the Laren School with his partners Jozef Israels and Albert Nehuys. Mauve initially studied in the studio of Van Os, an academic and traditional painter. Mauve eventually strayed from Os’s painting methods and began using looser brushwork and a more intense and brilliant palette.

Mauve’s paintings almost always depict harmonious, rural landscapes. Common scenes include the meadows and country roads of the Oosterbeek and Wolfhezen districts as well as the coast of Scheveningen in Holland.
