Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer and conductor of the early Romantic period. He was born to a notable Jewish family, being the grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His work includes symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano and chamber music. After a long period of relative denigration due to changing musical tastes in the late 19th century, his creative originality is now being recognized and re-evaluated, and he is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era.

There are relatively few known portraits of Mendelssohn in existence. Some of the ones that art historians do know about were painted by the artists brother-in-law, Wilhelm Hensel.

It is unknown how many portraits of this composer there could be, but the possibilities are endless. Still wondering about a 19th century portrait in your family collection? Contact us... it could be of composer Felix Mendelssohn.
