Charles Joseph Natoire was an 18th century French rococo artist who mainly painted decorative studies for the French Crown, including religious and mythological scenes. He won the Prix de Rome in 1721 and studied in Rome for five years. He was later named Director of the French Academy in Rome, and during this time, almost completely stopped painting.

He taught Fragonard and Robert Hubert and towards the end of his career, took up landscape painting. Many of his paintings were also studies for frescoes that have since been lost. The largest collection that is still in existence is at the Hôtel de Soubise in Paris.

Today, Natoire’s work is housed all over the world, including the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and perhaps in your own home.
