Giuseppe de Nittis was an Italian painter who was born in Barletta. He was known for his unique style which art critics claimed to be a merge between Impressionism and the Classical Salon style. He originally studied under Giovanni Battista Calò and in 1863 was expelled from the Instituto di Belle Arti in Naples for insubordination.

The year after being expelled from the art institute, de Nittis launched his art career by exhibiting two paintings at the Neapolitan Promotrice. He became friends, during this time, with fellow Italian artists from the Macchiaioli Movement and also exhibited in Florence. He would essentially become known for his Parisian genre scenes, Italian landscapes and early Impressionist pieces.

In 1867, de Nittis moved to Paris and met with Goupil, an art dealer whom he entered into a contract with. For Goupil, de Nittis was to produce saleable genre pieces, which he did with great flair.

During this time, he continued to paint what he wished and gained a great deal of visibility by exhibiting his works in the Salons. Also during this time, he returned to Italy for a brief period and was able to paint landscapes again. Some of these paintings of the Italian countryside included views of Mt. Vesuvius.

Now, no longer under contract, de Nittis returned to Paris and found great success at the salons in 1872. He was later asked to exhibit his work with the Impressionists after his friend Edgar Degas extended him an invitation. He would continue to paint in an Impressionistic style after a trip to London also during this time.

In his last years, de Nittis continued to return to Italy from time to time and took up using pastels later in his career. Pastels would be a very important medium for the artist, and he used them quite frequently. His most notable use of pastels was in creating portraits of his myriad of artist, poet, and writer friends in Paris, such as Manet and de Goncourt.

De Nittis’ life was tragically cut short when he died at the young age of 38 of a sudden stroke. He left behind a fairly large oeuvre of paintings, pastels and sketches created in Italy, France and England. Today his work is housed all over Europe and perhaps in your own home.
