Leon-Germain Pelouse was a French artist born in the village of Pierrelaye. He was a talented landscape painter whose compositions neared perfection to the point that his paintings were almost photorealistic.

Pelouse was initially a traveling salesman, but at the age of 27 he left his profession to become a painter. He first exhibited his work in 1865 at the Salon de Paris, but was not immediately popular in the art community.

After winning awards for his paintings in 1873 and 1876, Pelouse finally found a moderate amount of success. He was finally an established artist when he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1878. During this time, he was also traveling extensively throughout France and exhibited his work all over Europe from Belgium and the Netherlands to Italy.

Pelouse spent much of his life divided between Paris and his beloved town of Cernay-la-Ville. He settled there with his wife and adopted son and enjoyed painting the town and surrounding countryside.

Some art historians name Pelouse as one of the finest landscape painters in the latter half of the 19th century. He was the founder of the “Cernay school” of painting, from which he had many pupils such as Rambaud, Joubert, Rigolot and more.

Today, Pelouse’s work is housed all over France in Paris, Rouen all over the countryside, as well as in the United States, Canada, Norway and Australia. Still wondering about a late 19th century French landscape in your home? Contact us…it could be by Leon-Germain Pelouse.
