Jean-Francois Peyron was an 18th century Dutch painter. Best known for his historical scenes, Peyron studied under Dandre-Bardon and was also a student of Louis Lagrenee.

Peyron won the Prix de Rome in 1773, beating out rival Jacques-Louis David. Peyron and David would have a life long rivalry, though today, Peyron is considerably less known.

Peyron spent seven years in Rome after winning the grand prix, and he became highly influenced by the work of the Old Italian masters. He developed a very dark palette and mainly painted religious and historical subjects. Many of these paintings feature death or a funeral as the subject of the composition.

Throughout his career, Peyron found much success and procured wealthy patrons such as King Louis XVI. Today his works are housed all over the world, including in The Louvre in Paris.
