Liubov Popova was a Russian artist and designer. She was born near Moscow and initially studied under Stanislav Zhukovsky in 1907, followed by Ivan Dudin and Konstantin Yuon in 1908. During this time, she was traveling quite frequently and was inspired by the work of Mikhail Vrubel in Kiev and early Renaissance art in Italy.

A study visit to Paris in 1912 spurred an interest in Cubism and Italian Futurism. There, she became friends with Futurist artists such as Jean Metzinger, André Dunoyer and Henri Le Fauconnier. She amalgamated the Futurist styles for the following four years, before embracing pure abstraction. Popova participated in many advanced art exhibitions in Russia during this time, mostly in Moscow.

In 1916, Popova again joined a popular new group of artists known as the Suprematists, headed by Kasimir Malevich. After the revolution she rejected painting as bourgeois and devoted herself to the applied arts. This included creating costumes, theater sets, textiles, porcelain, dresses and books. Popova also served as a teacher to other artists at Svomas and Vkhutemas in 1918, and was a member of Inkhuk from 1920 to 1923. She died of Scarlet Fever at the age of 35.
