Odilon Redon was a French artist known for his Symbolist drawing, prints and paintings. Redon was born in Bordeaux with the name Bertrand-Jean, but his mother, Odile began calling him Odilon at a young age. Redon showed artistic talent at a young age and won awards at school for his drawings. His father urged him to study architecture, but after failing to enter the architecture program at the Ecole des Beaux Arts Redon continued taking in drawing and painting. Redon studied under the painter, Jean-Léon Gérome and the sculptor, Rodolphe Bresdin.

During the Franco-Prussian War, around 1870, Redon put aside his interest in painting to serve in the army. When his military duty ended he returned to Paris and made a series of charcoal drawings and lithographic prints. These colorless works are referred to as the ¨noirs¨. His lithograph series “Dans le Reve” was first published in 1879, giving him his first bit of public recognition.

In 1884 Redon gained more public attention with the release of a cult film, which told the story of an aristocrat who collected work by Redon. As Redon became more popular he started working with more colorful oils and pastels and exhibited with the Nabis.

Redon’s Symbolist work explores inner emotions, abstracted visions and thoughts, which portray a dream-like quality. His images range from the lovely to the grotesque. Redon compared his work to music, in that it has the power to transport you to another mental state and stimulate one’s imagination.

In 1913 Redon had a major breakthrough in his career when he was given a solo show at the Armory in New York City. While Redon died only a few years later, his name and work continued to grow in popularity. While many of his paintings are owned by the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, his drawings and prints have spread far and wide.
