Michel Simonidy was an illustrator and painter born in Bucharest, Romania but studied and lived much of his life in France. He was a student of Leon Bonnat and also worked under Gabriel Ferrier and Fernand Humbert. During his lifetime, he was well known for his still life paintings, nudes, historical scenes, landscapes and marine scenes.

Simonidy worked in oils, gouache, pastel and watercolor and created pen and ink illustrations as well. His style was that of a post-Impressionist/Expressionist, and is characterized by the use of bold colors, blurred edges and fantasy-like scenes. Women bathing in a lake, café scenes, and pictures of mothers and children were common themes for Simonidy.

In 1901, Simonidy was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor, and his work is still highly sought after today. Still wondering about an painting similar to his style hanging in your home? Contact us…it could be by Michel Simonidy.
