Ive Šubic was a Slovenian painter born in Hotovlja. At the age of eighteen, Šubic enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Just a year later Šubic was enlisted as a fighter in the Cankar’s Battalion. The group was part of the National Liberation Army during the Second World War in Slovenia. In addition combat, Šubic worked as an illustrator for the Central Engineering department of the army.

After World War II ended, Šubic returned to his studies, enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. Šubic showed great promise as a painter and trained under the influence of Gojmir Anton Kos, Božidar Jakac and Gabrijel Stupica.

Šubic’s work ranges from oil or tempera paintings to graphics and book illustrations. He won several awards for his work during his lifetime, including the Prešeren Prize for fine arts.
