Jan Frans van Dael was an 18th century Belgian painter who was a favorite of many aristocrats and royal figures. He was often patronized by Louis XVIII and Empress Josephine, and specialized in still life paintings. Van Dael studied at the Antwerp Fine Art Academy, and moved to Paris in 1793. While in Paris, he lived in the Louvre and began to exhibit in the Salons in 1793. Van Dael is best known for his still life and portraits, but he also painted some history and genre scenes.
