Remedios Varo was a Spanish-Mexican, para-surrealist painter. Varo was born in Girona, Spain in 1908 and relocated to Paris during the Spanish Civil War. Varo became involved in the surrealist movement and married the French, surrealist poet Benjamin Peret. In Europe Varo looked at the work of André Breton, Francisco Goya, El Greco, Picasso, Braque and Giorgio de Chirico.

In 1941 during the Nazi occupation in Paris, Varo moved to Mexico City. Though Mexico was only intended to be a temporary refuge, Varo stayed in Latin America for the rest of her life.

In Mexico Varo met artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and English painter Leonora Carrington. The merging of European and Latin American influences created originality in Varo’s style.

Varo painted with oil on masonite, using a technique reminiscent of egg tempera. Varo combined this refined painting method with her more experimental habits in Mexico. Varo saw mystic and hermetic traditions a way to open up her mind and transform her state of consciousness.

Varo became a well-established artist in Mexico City, exhibiting regularly in galleries and cultural centers. Today museums continue to hold retrospectives of her work. Do you think you own a Remedios Varo painting? Contact us. We are the Remedios Varo experts.
