Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun was a French painter, and was one of the favorites of Marie Antoinette. She taught herself to paint by copying the works of van Dyck, Greuze and Reubens. She left France for Italy during the French Revolution. Some art critics have hailed Vigée-Lebrun as the most famous female painter of the 18th century.
