Thomas Webster was a British painter, who is best known for his English genre scenes. Webster was born in Pimlico, London, where he spent much of his life. Webster’s father, who worked for George III, prompted his son to follow a musical path. Webster participated as a chorister at St. George Chapel in Windsor and at St. James’ Palace in London.

In 1821 Webster decided to shift his practice to painting and entered the Royal Academy. Webster was an excellent art student and won a first prize for one of his portraits in 1824. After completing school, Webster continued to have success with his paintings. He exhibited at the Suffolk Street Gallery, as well as at the Academy and with the British Institution.

Later in Webster’s career he was named Associate, and eventually Royal Academician at the Royal Academy. He was involved with the Academy until his retirement in 1876. After leaving the Academy Webster moved to the artists’ colony in Cranbrook, where he spent the last decades of his life. At Cranbrook several promising artists worked under Webster, including George Bernard O’Neill and Frederick Daniel Hardy.

Webster’s genre paintings remained popular throughout his lifetime. Collectors continue to value Webster’s work, as he is one of the foremost English genre painters from his time period. Do you think you own a painting by Thomas Webster? Contact us. We are the Webster experts.
